So I'm reading a review of the Elvis Costello signature Jazzmaster thinking, "Now there's a guitar I want to play", and I'm looking over to the corner of the workshop where a large slab of reclaimed Walnut wood is just sitting there. Hadn't really decided what to do with it as it was scratched, pitted and generally not looking great but the finish of the Costello Jazzmaster made the idea seem perfect sense.
True Jazzmaster pickups have a darker warmth to them due to the very shallow coil height. Whereas P90s, Teles and Strat single coils are tall & relatively narrow, true Jazzmaster pickups have a coil height of around 1/8th of an inch, making them short and fat. This helps give the guitars their distinctive sound. So the idea took off, true vintage style Jazzmaster pickups screwed into dark heavy wood making a great twist on a classic guitar.
